VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit: which pouch suits you?

VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit is the comparison most pouch users make at some point, because these are the three brands of the big tobacco companies and the three names you see most often in Europe. All three are tobacco-free nicotine pouches, but they differ in strength steps, pouch size, moisture and flavour style. This guide compares them point by point so you can see which one fits what you are looking for.

Nordic Spirit is not part of our range at the moment, so its details come from the brand's retail listings and trade press and are given as approximate figures. All three brands change their range often, so always check the can.

VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit: who makes them

Each of the three brands belongs to one of the big tobacco companies:

• VELO belongs to British American Tobacco (BAT). It was first sold in most of Europe under the name Lyft and became VELO between 2021 and 2022. Our guide what is VELO covers the brand in more detail.
• ZYN was created by Swedish Match, which has been part of Philip Morris International since 2022.
• Nordic Spirit belongs to Japan Tobacco International (JTI).

None of the three contains tobacco leaf, so none of them is snus in the strict sense. That matters in the EU, where tobacco snus is banned everywhere except Sweden, while nicotine pouches are regulated country by country. VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit: strength compared

Strength is the most important difference, and each brand shows it in a different way.

A few points stand out. ZYN and VELO both start low, with small mini pouches of 3 mg to 4 mg that are aimed at people who are new to pouches. Nordic Spirit starts a little higher. At the top end, all three brands reach roughly the same level, at around 16 mg to 17 mg per pouch. Those strengths are meant for experienced users only.

Because each brand uses its own labels, the safest way to compare is milligrams per pouch. One brand's "strong" can be another brand's "regular", and milligrams per gram depend on the pouch weight. VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit: pouch size and feel

VELO and ZYN both sell several pouch sizes. VELO has Mini, Slim and Standard pouches. ZYN uses mini pouches for its lower levels and slim pouches for its higher levels. A smaller pouch sits more discreetly under the lip and usually holds less nicotine. Nordic Spirit uses one slim format for its main range.

Moisture also changes how a pouch feels. A moister pouch releases nicotine and flavour faster. A drier pouch releases them more slowly and can feel less intense at first. Nordic Spirit sells its range in a Dry and a Moist version, VELO and ZYN pouches sit in the middle. If a pouch feels dry or papery to you, a moister pouch may suit you better.

All three brands sell mint and fruit, but the focus differs:

• Nordic Spirit mixes classic mints such as Sweet Mint, Spearmint and Frosty Mint with a few fruit flavours such as Raspberry and Bergamot Wildberry.

If you mainly use mint, all three brands have a good choice. If you prefer fruit with a cooling finish, VELO currently has the widest range of the three. If you want a numbered scale that tells you the strength at a glance, ZYN is the clearest.

VELO vs ZYN vs Nordic Spirit: which one to choose

There is no single best brand. The right choice depends on what you need:

• You are new to pouches and want the lowest strength: ZYN Mini S2 or VELO Bright Spearmint Mini, both around 3 mg to 4 mg per pouch.
• You want many fruit flavours: VELO has the biggest fruit range of the three.
• You prefer a moist pouch: look at the Nordic Spirit Moist range.

One thing all three have in common is that strength and flavour are linked. Not every flavour is available in every strength. Alternatives to VELO, ZYN and Nordic Spirit

The three big brands are easy to find, but they are not the only option, and they are not the strongest. If you have reached the top of their scale, or you want a wider choice of flavours, these are the directions to look in:
